Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Review

If you follow me on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/troywood765 then you know I have been following and looking forward to the new ninja turtles movie basically since it's inception. I finally got to see it this Saturday, the movie isn't without it's faults but it also isn't as bad as people think. Here are my thoughts.

Based on the creations of Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman, Teenage Mutant ninja Turtles follows channel 6 reporter April O'Neil as she struggles as a puff piece reporter trying to be taken seriously. This leads her to investigate the mysterious Foot clan that has been plaguing the city of New York. While investigating she discovers that there are rogue vigilantes fighting back against the Foot who leave a mysterious symbol where ever they have been. When the Foot clan stage a trap to lead these mysterious vigilantes out by taking hostages in the subway (including April of course) she discovers that the vigilantes are non other than 6 foot tall walking talking turtles who wear masks and know martial arts and have a mysterious link to her past.

If I can say anything about this movie is that it's fun. It takes the turtles that we all know and love and updates them for a new generation. In a world where superhero movies dominate the box office it makes sense that the turtles needed more of an upgrade, because having 5 foot tall wise cracking mutant teenagers who take time out from crime fighting to eat marshmallow and earthworm pizza would be ridiculous in an age of  The Dark Knight and Man of Steel both of whom took a more serious darker approach with the franchises. However that isn't to say this movie doesn't have it's faults, though I believe it faithfully represents the four turtles I believe it leaves a lot to be desired on how they treated Splinter, who is more of an abusive step father than mentor. Also the constant come-ons from Will Arnett to Fox's April does borderline on creepy. And yes it wouldn't be a kid's movie without a fart joke. The movie also suffers from plot holes and reuses the poison gas plot line from The Amazing Spiderman, but I don't believe that really distracts from an otherwise entertaining movie with cool action scenes, funny dialogue and pretty amazing CGI.

You will enjoy this movie if you can go in realizing that this isn't the Ninja Turtles from the 80's cartoon nor is the the rubber and latex turtles from the previous movies (thankfully) but rather a newer fresher take that breathes life back into a franchise that for all intents and purposes was growing stale. In the end Leonardo leads, Donatello does machines, Raphael is cool but rude and Michelangelo is a party dude, can you really ask for anything else?
