Gotham Pilot review

Monday saw the premier of DC comics newest foray into television, Gotham. Gotham stars Ben McKenzie as a young James Gordon who has just been assigned to the GCPD with his new partner Harvey Bullock played by Donal Logue. The episode begins with the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne, gunned down in an alley while their young son Bruce looks on in horror. Gordon and Bullock are called to investigate the killings much to Bullock's dismay who knows such a high profile killing is going to garner lots of unwanted attention.
Much like every pilot episode of a new series they spend a lot of time introducing characters who may or may not have more to do in the show. You get a very quick scene with a forensic scientist named Nygma, a few lines with a young red headed girl named Ivy and a scene with a struggling comedian...Joker maybe...kinda..perhaps. That is the one problem I had with this pilot, they spent to many wasted scenes introducing characters that you could have introduced several episodes even several seasons later. You are also introduced to a new character Fish Mooney played by Jada Pinket Smith who plays the stereotypical tough women who had to scratch her way to the top in this crazy man's world. It is with her that you also meet a young Oswald Cobblepot who I think they are setting up as the main villain later. You do get some set up between Bullock and Gordon's relationship, which the two actors have excellent chemistry together.
Over all Gotham seemed more like Law and Order special Gotham Unit then your typical comic book based TV show. Which in the world of Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Flash, Arrow, Constantine and several other projects that are coming, a break from the tights and fights may not be a bad thing.
